After Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped his fiancée, Lyanna Stark, Robert Baratheon led a rebellion against the Mad King Aerys Targaryen. Aided by his childhood friend, Lyanna's brother, Ned Stark, Robert was subsequently crowned king. When he died suddenly in a hunting accident, his heir Joffrey claimed the throne.

Even before she was married off to Robert Baratheon, she was involved in an incestuous relationship with her twin brother Jaime. After Robert's death, he plotted the murder of his brother Renly to rid himself of a rival, and, at the insistence of the Red priestess Melisandre, has been seeking those with royal blood to sacrifice.

The wife of Stannis Baratheon, Selyse is even more devoted than Stannis to the Lord of Light. Although the two have a daughter, Princess Shireen, Selyse remains deeply disappointed she never bore Stannis a son.

Maester to Stannis Baratheon, Cressen grew alarmed by Melisandre's increasing influence on Stannis and the king's rejection of the Faith of the Seven. When Cressen tried to poison the Red priestess, he succumbed instead.
