The Three-Eyed Raven accompanies Bran Stark into the past, to a Winterfell in the height of summer. Bran, no longer crippled, watches as 12-year-old Ned Stark and his 7-year-old brother Benjen train with wooden swords. Young and spirited Lyanna Stark rides in on horseback then gives the reins to a stable boy, Wylis, whom Bran recognizes as a young Hodor – but he can talk. The Three-Eyed Raven pulls a resistant Bran from the scene, and warns him not to allow his “great gift” to consume him.
Outside the cave, Bran cautions Meera that she isn’t safe in the open, but Meera remains where she is. Leaf, a Child of the Forest, tells the girl that Bran won’t be practicing his visions forever, and once he leaves he will need Meera’s help.
At a tavern in King’s Landing, a peasant lewdly describes his part in Cersei’s walk of atonement. Staggering outside to relieve himself, the man looks up to find the Mountain, who crushes his skull.
Cersei, in mourning clothes, heads to the Sept, but is blocked by a group of Lannister guards. King Tommen has ordered that his mother remain in the Red Keep for her own safety, barring her from Myrcella’s funeral. Cersei and the Mountain tensely face-off with the captain and his men, but the Queen Mother returns to her quarters.
Tommen and Jaime Lannister stand over Myrcella’s body, discussing the search for Prince Trystane’s killers. Tommen believes Cersei may be responsible, but has kept her from the funeral for another reason: the Faith Militant won’t allow her inside the Sept. Jaime comforts the young king, and urges him to reconcile with his mother. As Tommen leaves, Jaime confronts the High Sparrow. He makes it clear he has no qualms about killing the holy man inside the Sept, but restrains himself when the Faith Militant appear.
On the streets in Braavos, the Waif shows up to give Arya another “lesson.” Beaten again, Arya hears Jaqen H’ghar ask who she is. “A girl has no name,” she struggles to repeat, even when offered the return of her sight. Still blind, but having passed his test, Arya follows the Faceless Man back to the House of Black and White.
With no information about the burning of the Meereenese fleet, Tyrion drinks, and asks Varys for other news. Varys tells him that the masters of Astapor and Yunkai have retaken their cities. Inquiring after Dany’s dragons, Tyrion discovers the two imprisoned beasts have stopped eating and, still tipsy, Tyrion decides to unchain them himself.
Once in the dragons' keep, Tyrion recounts his fascination with the beasts as a boy. He slowly removes the collar on Rhaegal, and is shocked as Viserion turns his head to request the same. Intimidated, Tyrion finishes the job and chastises Varys for letting him try it.
Lord Harald Karstark reports to Roose and Ramsay Bolton that the soldiers pursuing Sansa Stark have been found dead. Assuming she is headed north, Ramsay suggests they storm Castle Black, causing his father to scoff. Maester Wolkan interrupts with news of the birth of a healthy baby boy, prompting congratulations from Ramsay. Embracing his father, Ramsay then plunges a dagger into Roose’s heart. Ramsay orders Wolkan to send Lady Walda and her newborn son to the courtyard, then leads them into the kennels. Walda begs to be allowed to return to the Riverlands with her son, but Ramsay, unmoved, releases his hungry hounds.
Making their way through the northern woods, Brienne shares with Sansa her run-in with Arya Stark. Theon, knowing he can “never make amends” for his betrayal of her family, tells Sansa he cannot go with her to Castle Black, and departs for “home.”
Yara Greyjoy challenges her father, advocating peace for the Iron Islands. Heading out into a storm, Balon begins crossing a rope bridge to another Pyke tower, when he is stopped by a hooded figure. Revealing himself as Euron Greyjoy, the king’s younger brother declares he has come for the throne. The elderly king taunts Euron for going mad while at sea, cutting out the tongues of his men: “What kind of an Ironborn loses his senses during a storm?” Balon snatches a dagger and dives at his brother, but Euron quickly tosses the king off the bridge to his death.
Yara and her uncle Aeron oversee Balon’s funeral. As the body floats out to sea, Yara swears upon the Salt Throne she will avenge his murder. Aeron harshly reminds his niece that according to law, she must be voted onto the throne
As Thorne-loyalists begin to break into the Lord Commander’s chamber, a loud noise is heard from the main gate; Wun Wun, Tormund, and the other wildings rush in. Alliser attempts to rally the Night’s Watch, but the giant has successfully cowed the Thorne supporters. Edd orders the mutineers be locked up. Tormund examines Jon, and leaves to gather wood for a pyre.
Ser Davos enters Melisandre’s chamber to find she has been crying. When Davos asks if the priestess has the power to revive the Lord Commander, she doubts her own abilities. Urged to try, Melisandre chants and prays over Jon's bathed corpse, with Davos, Tormund and Edd watching, but eventually gives up.
Defeated, the group withdraws from the chamber. Only Ghost is present when Jon opens his eyes and breathes.
Walda gives birth to a baby boy, prompting Ramsay to murder Roose, Walda, and his new half-brother. Brienne reveals to Sansa that Arya is still alive. Theon requests to return to the Iron Islands, where his uncle Euron Greyjoy returns and murders King Balon Greyjoy. In Braavos, Arya is attacked by the Waif before Jaqen appears and orders her to follow him. Tyrion learns that Astapor and Yunkai have reverted to slavery, and releases Rhaegal and Viserion from their chains. Edd arrives with Tormund and the Wildlings and imprisons Thorne and the other mutineers. Davos persuades Melisandre to attempt to resurrect Jon Snow; though apparently unsuccessful, after the loyalists leave the room, Jon suddenly awakens.

In Braavos, Arya is attacked by the Waif before H'ghar appears and recruits her again. Walda, Roose's wife, gives birth to a boy, prompting Ramsay to murder Roose, her, and the baby. Brienne reveals to Sansa that Arya is still alive. Sansa permits Theon's return to the Iron Islands, where his uncle Euron reappears and murders King Balon. Seaworth persuades Melisandre to attempt to resurrect Jon. At first, her attempts seem to fail. However, once everyone leaves the room, he awakens.
In a cave an older man's head is intertwined with the branches. Bran Stark lies at the foot in a trance. The two time travel back to watch Ned and Benjen Stark play fighting as youth. Lyanna Stark arrives on horseback. A heavyset boy named Willis is there. It is a young Hodor. The Three-Eyed Raven ends the session abruptly. Bran wakes and sees Hodor, Meera is outside the cave pondering. Leaf tells Meera that Brandon Stark needs her. In Castle Black Ser Alliser tries to get Davos to open the door. A man with an axe starts to chop the door down, but suddenly Wun Wun leads a large throng of Wildings into the Courtyard. The Night's Watch surrender. Eddison Tollert has brought Tormund, they throw Alliser and the other murderers into the dungeon. Eddison and Tormund look at Jon's lifeless body and plan a pyre. In a lively market a man jokes about Cersei to much laughter. As he goes for a piss the Mountain appears and kills the man. Cersei leads the Mountain downstairs but the Kingsguard stops her from attending Myrcella's funeral. King Tommen and Jaime observe the casket in the Sept of Baelor. Tommen says Cersei is not allowed in the Sept. He feels ashamed he wasn't able to protect Margaery and Cersei. The High Sparrow comes in and says Tommen cannot see Margaery until she atones. Jaime and the High Sparrow trade verbal threats, Jaime seems prepared to kill the leader but suddenly a large group of Faith Militants arrive, Jaime relaxes. Cersei overlooks Kings Landing from the Red Keep. Tommen arrives and apologizes. He feels bad he did not punish the High Sparrow earlier. The two hug. Tyrion tries to be friendly with Varys, Grey Worm and Missandei. With the fleet burned and the Slavers re-gaining control, Tyrion suggests unchaining the two dragons. He says the beasts are intelligent and goes alone to the deep underground cell. One lunges at him from the dark, Tyrion is startled but remains calm and tries to soothe the savage beast. Talking gently he unhooks the neck clamp. The second offers his neck also, Tyrion releases it and both dragons go back to the darkness. The Waif beats Arya as they spar with sticks. Jaqen tests her about her name, and lets her follow him as she refuses to answer with 'Arya'. Roose Bolton questions Ramsay on how Sansa escaped. He seems displeased with Ramsay, who wants to attack Castle Black. A maester announces a boy is born to Roose's wife. Ramsay comes forward to hug his father, then stabs and kills him. Harald Karstark watches and supports Ramsay. They will say Roose was poisoned by enemies. Ramsay has the mother Walda Frey and newborn baby come to the kennel. She is puzzled and nervous about the dogs. Ramsay opens the gates and let's the dogs attack and kill the woman and child. Theon gathers wood, Pod starts a fire. Brienne and Sansa talk. They discuss Arya and Winterfell. Theon asks for a horse and says he's leaving them and going home, there is no way he can repay what he did to the Starks. In the Iron Islands the King argues with his daughter Yara. She is exasperated by useless battles to take small mainland castles, and wishes to withdraw. Angry, Balon goes outside, a rickety rope bridge connects two towers. In the middle a hooded figure stops his way, it is Euron Greyjoy, a nephew back after many years away. Euron tosses Balon off the bridge. In the morning Yara and others commit Balon's body to the sea, unsure how he died. The Maester tells Yara she does not automatically become Queen, the group will decide. Davos goes to see Melisandre. He asks if she can bring Jon back. Not too confident, she says she saw it done once. The Red Witch doubts her faith. She washes the body and snips some hair. She chants some ancient verses in another language. Tormund, Eddison and Davos watch silently. She washes his hair. She puts her hands on his torso and speaks the words. Nothing seems to happen and Tormund leaves snorting. Davos looks down in thought then leaves also. The sleeping dire wolf stirs, then Jon awakes gasping.
