Davos Seaworth stares as Jon Snow wakes up in the Lord Commander’s chamber. Jon touches his stab wounds, and gasps, “I shouldn’t be here.” Astonished, Melisandre asks Jon what he saw after he died – and he responds, “nothing.” Davos requests the Red Woman leave them and tries to comfort Jon, who questions why he was brought back, and laments how he failed. "Go fail again,” Davos advises the young man. As Jon emerges from his room, the wildings and Night’s Watch gather in the courtyard, unsure what to make of the resurrected Lord Commander. Jon’s discomfort wanes slightly as he is embraced by Tormund and Edd.
Gilly, elated by the adventure, sails to Oldtown with Samwell Tarly, who is wracked with seasickness. He confesses his plan for her and Little Sam: The Citadel won’t allow women so he’s taking her to his family in Horn Hill and will claim Gilly is his mistress and Little Sam is his bastard son. Gilly, upset at first, softens when Sam reminds her how much he cares for them. Referring to Sam as the father of her baby, she agrees to go.
Bran Stark and the Three-Eyed Raven return to the past, this time watching as young Ned Stark and his men approach a tower protected by two of the Mad King’s Kingsguard. Bran immediately recognizes Ned's hero, Ser Arthur Dayne, “the best swordsman he ever saw.” Dayne takes up arms instead of telling Ned where his sister is, and Bran is shocked to see his father's legendary defeat of Dayne revealed as a lie: Ser Arthur Dayne had beaten Ned when Howland Reed – Meera’s father – stabbed Dayne in the back. Bran calls out to his father, prompting Ned to pause on the tower steps in confusion. When the Three-Eyed Raven pulls Bran back, the boy furiously demands answers. The Three-Eyed Raven always told him his powers couldn’t affect the past, but now Bran has seen they can. His tutor assures him he won't be in the cave forever, but before he leaves, he must learn everything.
Daenerys is brought to Vaes Dothrak and the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen where her garments are stripped off and replaced with more appropriate attire. Aware of the life Daenerys had envisioned with Drogo, an elder priestess questions why Daenerys did not come to them directly after Drogo’s death. Daenerys states she does not belong there, but is surprised to learn that now the khals can decide whether she becomes Dosh Khaleen – or suffers a worse fate.
Vala, the Meereenese prostitute who helped the Sons of Harpy murder members of the Unsullied and Second Sons, is brought to Varys. He offers a large bag of silver and passage to Pentos for her and her son, in exchange for information.
Attempting to socialize with Missandei and Grey Worm, Tyrion is interrupted by Varys, who has discovered the former masters of Astapor and Yunkai, with help from Volantis, are funding the Sons of the Harpy. Not ready to commit to war, Tyrion asks Varys to send a message instead.
In his laboratory, Qyburn hands out sweets to the children who served as Varys' “Little Birds,” bringing him information. As the children scamper off, Cersei explains that at her trial she will request trial-by-combat, and Ser Gregor will be her unbeatable champion. The queen mother instructs Qyburn to place Little Birds throughout Westeros – she wants to hear every whisper about her family.
Escorted by the Mountain, Jaime and Cersei enter the Small Council to find that Grand Maester Pycelle, Mace and Olenna Tyrell, and Kevan Lannister, their uncle and now Hand of the King, have no interest in including them. “Seeing as you cannot make us leave,” says Cersei, “we had best get on with it.” Kevan agrees he cannot make them go, but makes his point by leaving himself, followed by the others.
King Tommen visits the Sept, insisting that the High Sparrow allow Cersei to see Myrcella’s resting place. The High Sparrow refuses but takes the time to explain his reasons to Tommen. "There is so much good in everyone," he tells the young king. "The best we can do is help each other to bring it out."

Inside the House of Black and White, Arya trains with the Waif who interrogates her about her family and "funny little" list. Arya confesses that although she left the Hound to die, she had removed him from her list beforehand. Certain Arya has left off a name, the Waif takes a swing, and is dismayed when the blind girl blocks it. Jaqen H’ghar asks Arya to tell him her name, and she responds she has none. The Faceless Man leads her to the poisoned fountain and hands her a cup. Hesitating at first, she drinks – and finds her sight restored. Jaqen asks her again for her name, and when she answers, “No One” this time, she believes it.
Smalljon Umber meets with Ramsay Bolton and Harald Karstark. Concerned about the number of wildlings Jon Snow allowed past the Wall, Smalljon asks for help should they come farther south. Unwilling to kneel before Ramsay, Smalljon offers a “gift” instead: Osha and Rickon Stark, with Shaggydog’s head as proof of their identity.
Thorne and his fellow mutineers stand on gallows in the Castle Black courtyard waiting to be hanged. As Jon asks for last words, Thorne is unrepentant, and Olly remains silent. Jon pauses, draws Longclaw and cuts the rope. He stares at his killers’ dead faces. Edd says they should burn the bodies, and Jon agrees that Edd should. He hands over his Lord Commander’s cloak, and gives Edd command of Castle Black: "My watch is ended."
Jon Snow reveals himself to the wildlings and promptly executes Alliser Thorne, Olly and the other officers involved in his assassination for treason. He leaves Castle Black, leaving Edd in charge of the Nights Watch. In Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys is inducted into the Dosh Khaleen. Varys discovers the masters of Astapor, Yunkai and Volantis have been financing the Sons of the Harpy. In a vision, Bran sees his father and Lord Howland Reed kill Ser Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy in Dorne. In Kings Landing, Tommen converses with the High Sparrow whilst Jaime and Cersei interrupt a small council meeting, only to be shunned by Lord Kevan and the Tyrells. Arya trains rigorously with the Waif and her sight is finally returned to her once she has accepted herself as "no-one". Lord Umber asks Ramsay for help in protecting the North from the Wildlings, bringing Rickon Stark and Osha as a gift, along with the head of Shaggydog, Rickon's direwolf.

Davos watches stunned as Jon Snow sits up gasping. His wolf also stares. Jon touches his stab wounds and stumbles. He remembers being stabbed. Melisandre asks what he saw after being stabbed, but there was nothing. She says the Lord of Light sent him back, someone has to be the Prince Who Was Promised. Davos urges to keep going on cleaning up, but Jon is despondent. Jon and Davos walk to a balcony overlooking the Courtyard, he walks through the silent Night's Watch. Tormund Giantsbane gives him a friendly hug. Eddison Tollert is glad to see him. Sam and Gilly are in a ship in a storm. Sam is seasick while Gilly is cheerful and excited. Sam tells her they are going to his family home, his mother can take care of her while he is in Maester training in Old Towne. A group of horsemen approach a high castle. A knight hones his sword. Bran and the Three Eyed Raven stand and watch, they have travelled back in time to observe an important event. Bran recognizes a younger version of his father Ned Stark, the man beside him is Howland Reed, Meera's father. The knight is Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, the best swordsman. Stark has come for his sister, Dayne draws two swords. Five men against two, Then four on one, Dane with two swords defends against Stark's party. Three on one. Then two on one. Finally one on one, Ned Stark is about to lose until Reed recovers and stabs Dayne in the back, Bran is surprised how the battle ends. A scream in the castle, Ned runs toward. Bran calls out to his father, Ned stops and seems to have heard him. The Three Eyed Raven ends the trance, back in the cave he tells Bran he has to learn everything before taking over as the Three eyed Raven. Daenerys is walking in a dusty group as a prisoner. She is brought to a hut of Dothraki women, the Widows of the Khals, the Dosh Khaleen. The oldest lectures Dany in an unfriendly manner. In Mereen Varys meets a local woman. It is Vala, she has helped the Sons of the Harpy. She is bitter about the takeover of Mereen. Varys knows her son Dom and makes a veiled threat. He offers her a ship and silver to go away with her son. Tyrion, Grey Worm and Missandei sit quietly. Tyrion tries to engage the two in conversation. Varys joins them and says there are three groups funding the Sons of the Harpy. Tyrion asks Varys to send a message to the Slave Master triad. Maester Qyburn speaks to a group of street kids. They are Varys' Little Birds. He gives them candied plums and asks them to bring more friends, and whispers. Cersei and Jaime are there and the Mountain stomps in. The kids scatter. Cersei is planning to use Gregor Cleghane in an upcoming Trial by Combat. Cersei wants the Little Birds to find out everything. Pycelle tells the Small Council Qyburn was thrown out of the Citadel for black magic. Jaime and Cersei arrive, the Council tell Cersei she had no place there. But the twin Lannisters take seats and try to convince the others to rise up against the High Sparrow. The others refuse and leave the two alone at the table. King Tommen goes to see the High Septon. He is angry at the High Sparrow and wants Cersei to be able to see Myrcella's body. The High Sparrow talks in soothing tones, he says Cersei still has to go through a trial. He urges Tommen to have an open mind and the young King seems to listen. A blind Arya is beaten by the Waif. Arya also practices living blind, by her other senses. The Waif is trying to get Arya to reject and leave her past. Arya improves and is finally able to defend herself. When Jaqen asks her name she replies 'a girl has no name'. He offers a bowl of water and after a sip, she recovers her eyesight. Smalljon Umber meets Karstark and Ramsay Bolton. He has come to join Bolton to fight the Wildings and Snow. Umber refuses to kneel before Ramsay but does present a gift, Osha and Rickon Stark, and a black wolf's head as proof. At Castle Black the four men who knifed Jon Snow are arranged on a gallows. Jon asks them if they have any last words. Ser Alliser is defiant and doesn't regret. Jon cuts the holding rope and the four hang. Jon is sad about Olly in particular, then gives Eddison the cloak of the Commander, he says his 'watch has ended' and walks away.
