Season VII67: The Dragon and The Wolf

➲ Full History

From the battlements at King’s Landing, Jaime and Bronn survey the formation of Unsullied and Dothraki outside the city walls. Tyrion, Jon, and the rest of Dany’s supporters sail to the capital on Daenerys’ flagship; below deck, the Hound inspects the locked crate containing the captured wight.

“It must’ve been the most dangerous place in the world.” — Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion Lannister and Bronn

Bronn arrives with Brienne and Podrick to escort Daenerys’ assembly to the meeting site, the abandoned Targaryen dragonpit. Pod, Tyrion and Bronn use the walk to reconnect. Brienne falls in step with the Hound and informs him Arya is alive and safe at Winterfell. The guests collectively enter the pit, and take their sides.

Cersei enters the arena with her entourage. The Hound immediately recognizes his brother. All eyes remain on the queen as she heads to her seat, throwing Tyrion a look of complete hatred on her way. Cersei asks impatiently after Daenerys as the sound of wings grows louder. Daenerys makes her entrance astride Drogon; Rhaegal circles in the air. All parties present, Tyrion begins but is interrupted by Euron’s taunting. Cersei quiets the Ironborn king, and Tyrion continues: They will never see eye to eye, but on one point they must. Jon lays out the situation, “There is only one war that matters: the Great War. And it is here.” To emphasize the seriousness of the problem, the Hound unlatches the crate.

The Wight

The wight springs forward, heading straight for Cersei. The queen recoils, as the Hound jerks the wight back on its chain. He slices the creature in two. Qyburn, fascinated, picks up the wight’s still-moving arm. Jon demonstrates how fire and dragonglass can stop the wights. Confirming the creatures can’t swim, Euron announces he plans to sail to the Iron Islands and wait out the war, and suggests Daenerys do the same: “When winter’s over, we’ll be the only ones left alive,” he says and exits.

Euron Greyjoy

Denouncing Euron’s cowardice, Cersei accepts the offer of a truce, on one condition: Jon Snow must promise not to choose sides. Honest to a fault, Jon shocks everyone by confessing he has already pledged himself to House Targaryen. “Then there is nothing left to discuss,” remarks Cersei, leaving. Brienne stops Jaime on the way out, advising him to forget loyalty and convince his sister to change her mind.

Tyrion and Daenerys are grateful for Jon’s pledge, but everyone agrees his decision not to lie caused more harm than good. With only one option left, Tyrion heads to speak to Cersei. Jaime waits outside as his little brother enters the queen’s office. Cersei and Tyrion discuss all there is between them: their father’s murder and how his death exposed the family; Tyrion’s sorrow for Myrcella and Tommen. The queen refuses to acknowledge Tyrion’s grief, and won’t accept her brother isn’t out to destroy the family. Exasperated, Tyrion suggests Cersei just end him there, but she does not. As she speaks of the Northern threat, Tyrion notices Cersei’s subtle gestures over her stomach and realizes she’s pregnant.

As they wait for Tyrion to finish with Cersei, Dany looks over the dragonpit, and discusses her family history with Jon. She tells him about the witch’s prophecy that she will have no children, and he teases her about this “reliable source of information.” The levity ends when Tyrion returns ... followed by Cersei and her Queensguard. The Queen of the Seven Kingdoms declares the Lannister armies will march alongside the rest and fight the Great War.

“Not for me. For Yara.” — Theon Greyjoy

Studying the Dragonstone map, Jon, Daenerys and company determine their plans to head north. Daenerys decides to sail with Jon to send a clear message of alliance to the Northerners. The meeting over, Theon catches up with Jon in the audience chamber. Theon confesses he has always wanted to do the right thing, but felt trapped in his allegiance to both the Starks and the Greyjoys. Feeling sympathy despite his anger, Jon tells Theon he doesn’t need to choose. Theon realizes he has to try to rescue the one person who once tried to rescue him: Yara.

Theon Greyjoy and Harrag

Theon tells the remaining Ironborn they are going after his sister. Harrag -- the Ironborn who voiced his disgust at Theon’s decision to flee from Euron’s attack -- confronts him in a brutal fight, but Theon gets back up each time he’s knocked down. Finally, Theon tackles the large man to the ground and beats him senseless. The Ironborn follow their prince to the sea.

Cersei calls Jaime away from the Lannister generals to reveal her commitment to fight in the north was a lie. Jaime is shocked, and tries to rationalize with her -- even if they wait out the Great War they cannot beat Daenerys and her dragons. Cersei points out one dragon was missing from Daenerys’ display, and so the beasts must be vulnerable. Furthermore, they have the Iron Bank on their side. She reveals Euron’s exit from the meeting was a ploy; he is sailing for Essos to collect the Golden Company whom she has hired as mercenaries. Incensed by her duplicity, Jaime tells his sister he plans to keep his pledge. He dares the woman he loves to order him killed as he walks away.

No longer in his Lannister armor, Jaime rides a horse northward as snow begins to fall across King’s Landing.

“I’m a slow learner, it’s true. But I learn.” — Sansa Stark

A lone raven struggles through the blizzard and heads towards Winterfell. Inside Jon’s office, Sansa discusses the new scroll with Littlefinger -- Jon has bent the knee to Daenerys Targaryen. Littlefinger points out both rulers are young and unmarried, and an alliance would make sense. “He was named King in the North. He can be unnamed,” he suggests. Sansa argues Arya, now a trained assassin, would never agree. Littlefinger suggests she play a little game: assume the worse when assessing a person’s motives. He slowly coaxes Sansa to conclude Arya may have set her sights on becoming Lady of Winterfell.

Petyr Baelish

Sansa has Arya brought to the Great Hall. Bran sits beside his oldest sister at the high table, while Lord Royce, the Knights of the Vale, and Stark soldiers line the room. Littlefinger watches the proceedings leaning against a wall. Sansa declares the charges are of murder and treason, then turns to Lord Baelish to answer the accusations. Littlefinger, caught off guard, struggles to defend himself. Sansa rattles off his crimes -- the murder of Lysa Arryn, conspiring to murder Jon Arryn, betraying Ned Stark, and initiating the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters. Littlefinger denies it, until Bran recalls the exact words Littlefinger said as he held a knife to Ned’s neck: “I did warn you not to trust me.” Sansa thanks Littlefinger for the lessons he has taught her, and Arya steps forward to slits his throat with her Valyrian dagger.

The storm having passed, Arya and Sansa stand on the Winterfell battlements, remembering their father together.

“He’s the heir to the Iron Throne.” — Bran Stark

Sam Tarly family arrives at Winterfell

Sam and his family arrive at Winterfell. Sam approaches Bran who tells him he is now the Three-Eyed Raven and can see everything. Bran shares Jon must be told he is not a Snow, but a Sand -- the bastard child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Sam, realizing that isn’t correct, reveals the contents of Septon Maynard’s diaries: Rhaegar’s marriage to Elia Martell was annulled, the septon married Lyanna and the Targaryen prince in secret. Using his sight, Bran watches the wedding, and realizes the two were in love; the rebellion was built on a lie. He returns to Jon’s birth at the Tower of Joy and listens as Lyanna whispers to Ned the name of her son, “Aegon Targaryen.”

Bran Stark

As Daenerys’ flagship sails north, Jon knocks and enters Dany’s chambers. The pair make love. From the hallway, Tyrion sees the door close before returning to his own room.

Night King and Viserion

A horn blasts three times. Emerging from the frozen forest, the Army of the Dead arrives at Eastwatch. Tormund and Beric watch in horror as the Night King, riding Viserion, uses the dragon to blast blue fire at the icy Wall. Pieces of the Wall begin to collapse, as Tormund and his wildings rush to safety. The ice dragon continues until a breach opens, wide enough for the massive army to walk through into the realms of men.

  • The only daughter of Tywin Lannister, Cersei was involved in an incesturous relationship with her twin brother Jaime even before she was married off to Robert Baratheon. Cersei’s plan to empower the Faith Militant backfired when she herself was imprisoned and accused both of murdering Robert and of incest - with her cousin Lancel. Cersei finally confessed to the one charge of incest, and as forced to atone by walking naked and in shame back to the Red Keep. Rather than face a trial, Cersei conspired with Qyburn to eliminate her enemies by detonating a secret cache of wildfire beneath the Sept of the Baelor. Her last living child killed himself after learning his wife died in the explosion. With no one to stop her, Cersei had herself crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, and took her seat on the Iron Throne. Although she pledged Lannister troops in the fight against the Army of the Dead, she has no intention of keeping that promise. Jaime left the city upon hearing her deceit.

  • Daenerys Targaryen( Emilia Clarke )
  • Daenerys Targaryen
  • With the Unsullied of Astapor and the Second Sons under her command, Daenerys liberated Slaver’s Bay from thousands of years of bondage, remaining in Meereen to prove herself as a queen worth following. When her entourage was besieged at the Fighting Pit of Daznak, Dany was whisked away by Drogon. She was captured by the Dothraki but eventually took command of the khalasars. After crushing an uprising from the masters, Dany received Theon and Yara Greyjoy, Olenna Tyrell, and Ellaria Sand into her service. Daenerys has returned to Westeros and to her family’s ancestral castle of Dragonstone, where she would meet Jon Snow. When the Lannisters took Highgarden, Daenerys struck back against their army with her Dothraki forces and Drogon. Jon Snow convinced of her of the threat beyond the Wall, and she pledged to support his cause. When Jon’s group ran into trouble up north, Dany flew to their rescue, and was devastated when Viserion was killed by the Night King. Upon receiving Cersei’s promise of aid to fight in the North, Daenerys, accompanied by Jon Snow, set sail for Winterfell. The two succumbed to their feelings for one another, unaware of Jon’s true lineage.

  • Jon Snow( Kit Harington )
  • Jon Snow
  • Son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, Jon was raised by Lyanna’s brother Ned as his bastard son, and is unaware of his true parentage. Jon joined the Night's Watch where he served as steward to Lord Commander Mormont. After Mormont’s death, Jon was elected Lord Commander of the Watch, and made the unpopular decision to ally with the wildlings and save them from the White Walkers. For that, he was murdered at Castle Black by his own men, but to the awe of everyone, Jon was brought back to life by the Red Priestess Melisandre. Restored as Lord Commander, Jon executed his murderers before abdicating his command and passing it on to Edd Tollett. He swore off all fighting, until a reunion with his long-lost sister Sansa persuaded him to retake Winterfell. With a rag-tag army of Northern allies and the crucial last-minute support of the Vale, Jon led the Starks to victory in the Battle of the Bastards and reclaimed their childhood home. Impressed with his leadership, the Northern houses proclaimed him King in the North. Jon met with Daenerys Targaryen in hopes of forming an alliance, and Dany permitted him to mine dragonglass for weapons against the dead. To convince Cersei Lannister of the looming threat, Jon led a small band of men beyond the Wall in search of a wight, but they were attacked by the Army of the Dead. Daenerys rescued them with her dragons, but Jon was left behind and saved by his uncle Benjen, who sacrificed himself so Jon could live. While recovering on Daenerys’ ship, Jon pledged himself to Dany’s side. The group presented the wight to Cersei and her advisers in King’s Landing, where Jon publicly declared his loyalty to the Targaryen queen. En route to Winterfell to take on the Army of the Dead together, Jon and Dany succumbed to their feelings for each other.

  • Tyrion Lannister( Peter Dinklage )
  • Thyrion Lannister
  • As acting Hand of the King, Tyrion hatched the plan that saved King’s Landing from Stannis Baratheon’s attack. Convicted of murdering his nephew King Joffrey, Tyrion escaped execution with help from his brother Jaime, and fled King's Landing after killing his former lover Shae and his father. Tyrion found his way to Meereen to serve Daenerys Targaryen, and ruled the city in her stead. He remained beside her when Dany returned to Meereen and crushed the masters’ rebellion for good. Grateful for Tyrion’s wise counsel, Dany named him her Hand and he returned with her to Westeros. Tyrion has been an advocate for Daenerys's alliance with Jon Snow. He returned to King’s Landing in secret to persuade his brother Jaime that the greater fight is in the North.

  • Jaime Lannister( Nikolaj Coster-Waldau )
  • Jaime Lannister
  • The twin brother of Queen Cersei, Jaime is plagued by his nickname, “The Kingslayer,” which he earned after killing the Mad King during Robert's Rebellion. Jaime gained a friend in Brienne of Tarth during their journey back to King's Landing, but he lost his sword hand along the way. After his brother Tyrion was convicted of murdering King Joffrey, Jaime helped Tyrion escape, inadvertently allowing Tyrion to confront and kill their father. Following a failed mission to bring Princess Myrcella home from Dorne, he returned to King’s Landing and with the backing of the Tyrells, attempted to liberate Queen Margaery from the High Sparrow. This act of war led King Tommen to remove Jaime from the Kingsguard and assign him to reclaim Riverrun. Eager to rejoin his sister, Jaime negotiated a surrender with Edmure Tully, but he returned to King’s Landing to find Cersei on the throne. Giving up his family home of Casterly Rock, Jaime led the Lannister army to Highgarden, and allowed Olenna Tyrell to drink poison as her death sentence. In return, she confessed to killing Joffrey. After a spectacular defeat by Daenerys, her Dothraki, and her dragon, Jaime met with Tyrion to discuss a ceasefire to deal with the threat of the Night King. But when Cersei reneged on her promise to send troops to fight the Army of the Dead, Jaime abandoned his sister and her schemes. He now heads North to fight for the living.

  • Sansa Stark( Sophie Turner )

  • Sansa's naïveté didn't help her in King’s Landing, where her former fiancé, Joffrey Baratheon, routinely abused her. After her engagement to Joffrey was dissolved, Sansa was married to his uncle Tyrion Lannister, who treated her with the utmost respect. She fled to the Eyrie with Littlefinger’s help after Joffrey’s murder, and protected him following the murder of her aunt Lysa. Sansa returned to Winterfell to marry Ramsay Bolton, but fled the castle with Theon Greyjoy during Stannis Baratheon's failed attack. Brienne of Tarth came to their rescue during their escape, and she now serves as Sansa’s protector. Sansa reunited with her half-brother Jon Snow at Castle Black and the two took back Winterfell in the Battle of the Bastards, thanks to Sansa’s recruitment of the Knights of the Vale. She objected to Jon’s plan to meet with Daenerys Targaryen, but accepted the responsibility of holding Winterfell in his stead. As Lady of Winterfell, Sansa grew suspicious of Littlefinger’s designs and consulted with her brother Bran, thus uncovering all of Littlefinger’s past crimes. She underwent rigorous training to become a Faceless Man but struggled to relinquish her past life. Unwilling to murder Lady Crane as instructed, Arya faced and killed the Waif. Impressed, Jaqen accepted Arya as No One, but she chose to retain her identity as a Stark and leave Braavos. She returned to Westeros and fulfilled her promise to kill Walder Frey. She has now reunited with Sansa and Bran at Winterfell, and executed Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish on Sansa’s orders.

  • Euron Greyjoy( Pilou Asbæk )
  • Euron Greyjoy
  • Balon Greyjoy’s younger brother Euron returned from years at sea to claim the Iron Islands as his own – by killing his brother. He unapologetically confessed to the murder at the kingsmoot, and was still elected King of the Iron Islands. His plan to seduce Daenerys Targaryen with the Iron Fleet was stymied when his niece Yara and nephew Theon allied with her instead. To prove his worth to Cersei, Euron ambushed Dany’s fleet and presented Ellaria and Tyene to Cersei for execution. Upon seeing the wight Jon Snow brought to the capital, Euron seemingly retreated to the Iron Islands.

Littlefinger secretly arranged the marriage of Sansa to Ramsay Bolton… while also offering Cersei the Knights of the Vale to take the North from the Boltons. After Sansa escaped Winterfell, Littlefinger prompted Robin Arryn to send his forces to help the Starks win back Winterfell. Littlefinger remained there to advise Sansa and drive a wedge between her and her family. Suspicious of Littlefinger’s intentions, Sansa visited her brother Bran and so uncovered all of Littlefinger’s past crimes. She sentenced Littlefinger to death and Arya Stark carried out the execution.

She died in Ned’s arms during his attempt to rescue her, though not before begging him to protect her baby, Aegon. Ned renamed the boy Jon and raised him as his own bastard son. Bran Stark used his sight and witnessed the secret wedding between his Aunt Lyanna and Rhaegar after Samwell Tarly found an account of it in a septon’s diary at the Citadel. Bran and Sam now know that Rhaegar and Lyanna's son, Jon, is the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne.
