Game of Thrones Houses

House Martell

  • House Martell
  • In the period of Aegon’s Conquest, Dorne resisted all of the Targaryen king’s efforts to annex it into the Seven Kingdoms. A marriage alliance between a Targaryen king and a princess of Dorne finally brought the region under the rule of the Iron Throne. The death of Oberyn Martell in King's Landing complicated the royal family's relationship with the Martells, and divided Dorne’s loyalties between Prince Doran and Ellaria Sand. With the help of Oberyn’s bastard daughters the Sand Snakes, Ellaria murdered Myrcella Baratheon and Doran and aligned herself with the Tyrells and Targaryens in her mission of vengeance against the Lannister. Her plans were thwarted by Euron Greyjoy, who captured the Sand Snakes at sea and gave Ellaria and Tyene to Cersei for execution.

  • ➲ Sunspear
  • Sunspear is the capital of Dorne, southernmost of the Seven Kingdoms, located in the far southeast of the continent on the Summer Sea. It consists of a strong, fortified castle and a town that sprawls around it. It is a town built largely of mud and straw. The town's largest structure is Spear Tower, a 150-feet structure with a pinnacle of shining steel.

The castle was the seat of House Martell, Princes of Dorne, until the family was legally wiped out by Ellaria Sand and the three eldest Sand Snakes, who seized power through a coup. With the latter dead and the former imprisoned for life in King's Landing following a naval assault, the castle's ownership is uncertain.

  • ➲ Dorne
  • Dorne is one of the nine constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms. It is the southernmost part of the continent of Westeros, located thousands of miles from Winterfell and the North, and has a harsh desert climate. The Dornishmen are ethnically distinct from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, being largely descended from Rhoynar refugees who intermarried with the local population of Andals and First Men roughly a thousand years ago. As a result, they have very different customs and traditions compared to the other regions of Westeros.

Dorne was a sovereign kingdom before the invasion of Aegon the Conqueror, and weathered his attack to remain one afterwards, the only one of the Seven Kingdoms to retain its independence. It joined the Seven Kingdoms through peaceful marriage alliance nearly two centuries later, only one century before Robert's Rebellion. As a result of joining through marriage and not conquest, Dorne was allowed to keep many of its local customs and laws, such as equal inheritance laws for male and female heirs. Due to these different ethnic, legal, and political factors, the Dornishmen are very independently minded, with a stronger sense of "national identity" than many of the other Seven Kingdoms.

Dorne is ruled from the castle of Sunspear by House Martell. Bastards born in Dorne are given the surname Sand. Things from Dorne are known as "Dornish," while the people of Dorne are properly known as the "Dornishmen," though its people are sometimes simply referred to as "the Dornish."

Following the recent Sand Snakes-led rebellion, all known trueborn members of House Martell are now dead, with the region under the command of Ellaria Sand. However, Ellaria herself is captured and imprisoned in King's Landing after Euron Greyjoy attacked the fleet transporting her back to Dorne for the army, leaving the region leaderless. It is highly unlikely, however, that Dorne will capitulate to Cersei's rule even without the vengeful Ellaria to lead them, given the extreme loathing they have for her and her family. Dorne's military remains at full strength, and the five surviving Sand Snakes- the illegitimate daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell- may well take up its' leadership in the future.
